Building Communities in 2013: Year In Review

It wasn't just about us.

2013 saw the birth of two new communities: Google Business Group kicked off its first event, and the selection of four new Google Student Ambassadors from two local universities. For the first time, it wasn't just about us.

The community also started to reach out to neighboring cities, starting with Iloilo. While we enjoy organizing developer events in our home turf, it's about time we extend a hand to our neighbors. After all, Iloilo is just a 30-minute ride away. We even flew out to the southernmost tip of the country to help GDG Davao organize their first DevFest! Goes to show how much we love what we do. <3

Awarding of Sanitation Hackathon Winners, February 9th.

Participants had a blast developing solutions at last year's Sanitation Hackathon, organized in partnership with the World Bank. We started the year with a big announcement: the World Bank is interested in helping one of the Bacolod projects move forward.  More details in our first quarter recap. Congratulations to all the winners!

Student Developer Day, February 16th.

In true Bacolod fashion, Student Developer Day had LCC's auditorium exploding students hungry for the latest tech dish. Originally started quite by accident in Bacolod City, SDD has become one of the biggest tech events in the city. Covering topics from Apps, Android, HTML5, Sites, and Startups, more than 500 students from 8 colleges and universities all over the province walked away inspired and raring to go. Some even travelled from as far as Kabankalan to attend!

DevFest Bacolod, September 28th.

Perhaps our biggest challenge for the year. And one of the most fulfilling.

Our post-event video would probably describe this experience best. Special thanks to Dennis Abad for creating this awesome video!

Also, check out the awesome official event photos!

Google Cloud Developer Challenge, launched in October

Hands down, this is probably one of the community's biggest triumphs this year. Franz Sarmiento, a Google Student Ambassador and GDG volunteer since the community started out, has been declared as one of the GCDC winners in South East Asia. Together with Katrina Tan Kit, they created MishMash, a social game that turns people from your Google+ circles into challenges. They won $20,000 plus, as an all-student team, they also won an $18,000 bonus for the university. Awesome job, guys!

Interested in MishMash? Check out the demo!

The community also organized a bunch of smaller events, bringing the year's total to 14: 4 MapUps and Geowalks, 8 Meetups and CodeLabs, SDD, and a DevFest.
  • Map Your Precinct, May
  • Google I/O Extended, May
  • GMail + Google Drive Workshop, July
  • Silay + Bacolod MapUp, August
  • Philippine Transport App Challenge - Iloilo and Bacolod, July
  • GCDC Launch, October
  • Southern Negros GeoWalk, December
What's up for 2014?

Fresh from a two-month break, we started out with a fully booked flight! Dart Flight School was a fantastic experience for all 50+ participants, we even concocted a birthday surprise for our resident twins!

The first half of the year looks pretty exciting: Student Developer Day, Women Techmakers, I/O Extended, to name a few.

Now the problem is: how can we do better after last year's awesome events and announcements? To be honest, we have absolutely no idea. But we're up for the challenge. :)

Need help organizing events?

We may be able to help! Fill up the form at http://goo.gl/NDUTD2. Please note that we are running purely on volunteer fuel so we may not be able to accommodate all requests.
